The UV Index is a forecast of the amount of skin damaging UV radiation expected to reach the earth's surface at the time when the sun is at its highest point in the sky which is around midday. The higher the UV index the more sun protection you will need for the day and less time you should spend in the sun.
What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is a disease when the UV (Ultra Violet) Rays are getting absorbed by the skin cells to create energy this is what we call sunburn. The brain sends more blood cells to the area that is injured so that is why the colour of sunburn is red. The time it takes to repair the damaged cells depends on the persons skin type, the darker your skin the longer you are able to stay outside, if you have pale skin the shorter the time you should spend outside. There are 3 types of skins cancer, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma - the most dangerous form of skin cancer. People are diagnosed with skin cancer around the age of 70, but can also be diagnosed to the age of 15 - 33 for melanoma. The best way to prevent skin cancer is to be sun smart.
